Matthew 6:33 "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
The Word seek means “to go in search of”, “to try to acquire or gain”. Every person in this world is seeking something – money, fame, friends, food on the table, a good job, a nice car, a big house, nice clothes… the list could go on for miles. We all seek a certain thing because it makes us feel good, because there is some type of benefit to us. Usually it’s because that thing is what we believe will make us happy. The Word is very direct in telling us that we should seek God and His Kingdom first. Why? Doesn’t God want us to have money, fame, friends, a good job, a nice car, a big house, nice clothes? YES! Every good and perfect gift comes from God! The reason He has told us to seek Him first – above and ahead of everything else we desire – is for our own good. The enemy has so perverted the world that God created that he will make someone think that they only way they can friends or a family is by joining a gang. Or that they only way for them to have money is by selling their bodies. That the only way to a good job is by working 24/7. The enemy will lie and tell you the only way you can afford nice clothes is by stealing them. That you can only afford a “clean” car by selling drugs.
How can we avoid the trap that the enemy sets? How do we avoid deception? The first and obvious answer is by seeking God first! By reading his Word and getting in prayer.
Also, look at the verse. It says seek His Kingdom and His righteousness. What is His Kingdom? It is righteousness (being in right relationship with God), peace and joy. That is what we all seek! To be good with God, to have peace and to have joy! If we seek Him first, he will give us all that AND he will give us everything else we need! God is not a prude. He doesn’t want to give you hand me downs, old and torn and faded. He wants you to have a new shiny Car, a big house, a great job and plenty of friends. He wants you to have the best things in your life. He just doesn’t want you to get caught up in these things because they will not got get you to heaven. And all these things will be give to you as well.
God’s end is to have you with him in eternity. We were created to have a relationship with Him. Seek Him first. Seek his joy and peace.
God Bless,
Arlene
